The fat tax concept is a hypothetical strategy to dis-incentivize unhealthy weight. The idea, if put into action, would tax foods and beverages that prove to be unhealthy, causing weight gain, and might also tax people who are overweight. The tax on overweight individuals would not be levied directly in many scenarios but instead assessed in a roundabout fashion. For example, people of an unhealthy weight may be ineligible for government health benefits or may have to pay more for those benefits. The fat tax currently remains only theoretical, but many policy makers would like to implement more financial incentives for maintaining a healthy weight.
