How To Qualify For A Window Tax Credit

Qualifying for a window tax credit requires a taxpayer to have installed an Energy Star certified window. The window must be put into service in the year in which the taxpayer wishes to claim the credit. The manufacturer of the window must certify that the window qualifies as an energy efficient window and that it has been installed in accordance with the Department of Energy’s standards.

What Is the Window Tax Credit?

The window tax credit was extended as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The available credit is equal to the lesser of $1,500 or 30 percent of the cost of the window and installation. A taxpayer must file a Form 1040 or 1040-A in order to claim the credit.
